Faced with challenges since his appointment as the Wyoming County Commissioner of Social Services in June 2025, Benjamin Dennis, of Lancaster, has brought with him more than 30 years of experience in child welfare to his new position.

As he learns the expectations of a new community and a new county, Dennis is optimistic as he approaches completion of his first year in his new position.

He holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in social work. He has worked for Erie County DSS in child protective services as a caseworker and at Gateway-Longview as a foster care and adoption specialist. He worked for CPS in Erie County for 18 years and eventually transitioned to take a position as the director of social services in Genesee County.

Dennis was officially appointed in Wyoming County last summer.

“The Department of Social Services truly does care about this community. We want to strive to provide crucial support for families, children, seniors, and individuals, ensuring no one in our community is left behind,” he said.

Dennis wants to be able to provide the most efficient and equitable services for the community and ensure the department is reaching its most vulnerable populations.

“…Wyoming County is a very proud hard-working community…I see a lot of opportunity right here in this community to develop a broader network of resources…,” said Dennis.
